VIRTUAL MAKEUP

This project was a design challenge created during the recruitment process for the position of UX Designer at Holition. The brief given consisted in developing an in-store makeup magic mirror for the brand Covergirl, using Perch Technology which would combine physical and digital interactions aided with augmented reality.

RESEARCH + MIRROR FUNCTIONALITIES

In general, the main users of this brand are young women, however the company’s goal is to reach a broader audience and therefore aims to be very inclusive and diverse in terms of age, ethnic, or what they call ‘vocational diversity’.

The in-store magic mirror integrates digital and physical interactions. The mirror has a physical display with a sample of four cosmetic products (lipstick, foundation, eyeshadow and blush). The main idea for using this selection of products was to emulate the common makeup routine. However users could also try on individually.  To start the interaction, the user stands in front of the mirror and picks up a product, then it is instantly applied on the user, aided with AR, and the product information shows on screen. The user can then browse all related color available by touching the screen.

To keep consistency with CoverGirl website, the mirror also suggests to pick up related product suggestions to complete a look, that help continuing with the makeup experience.

In the initial ideas of the Mirror design, accessibility was also taken into account.

When user picks up a physical product the screen activates and the interaction continues digitally through the screen. User can virtually try on products and browse all shades.

After going through the makeup products, the mirror offers the possibility to take a photo of the user look, and share it via social media.

Role: UX Designer

Tools: Pen and paper, Figma, InVision

Timeline: 3 Days

This is a posterior work, consisting on a design concept of an app that would scan user face to provide an accurate and real effect, and would apply virtual makeup using products from different looks. The user select the look and it is applied directly on their face (using Holition AR software)
